Guildhouse Catapult Mentorship 2022: Jogakbo Art

Mentee: Jonathan Kim
Mentor: Taerim Claire Jeon

This mentorship project focused on learning the traditional theory and technical foundations of Jogakbo (Korean patchwork) from Sydney-based artist Taerim Claire Jeon. As a Korean-Australian contemporary artist, my goal was to bridge the gap between my existing painting practice and the authentic materials and history of this traditional craft.

The mentorship allowed me to move beyond using Jogakbo as a purely visual design in my "crayong drawing" paintings to working with actual textiles. Through a series of intensive workshops in Sydney and ongoing online consultation,

I explored:
Theoretical Foundations: The history, types, and characteristics of traditional Korean fabrics such as silk, hemp, and cotton.
Technical Mastery: Traditional sewing techniques including homjil, gamchimjil, and setam-sangchim.
Creative Expansion: Combining my artistic concept of Gong-gan-seong (spatiality) with traditional Jogakbo construction.
