British School at Rome Residensy

My residency at the British School at Rome (BSR) served as a critical extension of my research into Gong-gan-seong (Spatiality), aiming to bridge the theories of Mono-ha and Dansaekhwa with the contemporary values of Italian Arte Povera. Through a "Phenomenological Exploration," I collected everyday objects and utilized oil pastels to investigate how the memory of materials and environmental elements—such as light and site-specific context—influence artistic interaction. This practice-led inquiry resulted in over twenty sculptures and a monumental 12-piece painting installation that explored the dual nature of spatiality beyond mere visual effects. The outcomes were successfully exhibited in Rome at the Romanian Academy and the BSR, establishing an aesthetic framework that informs global contemporary abstraction. Ultimately, this project provided a vital cross-cultural dialogue that integrates Far Eastern ontological inquiries with a universal language of spatiality, later presented at major venues like Linden New Art, West Gallery Thebarton, Praxis Artspace, Guildhouse Adelaide, Town Hall, and Sydney Contemporary. This residency was made possible by the generous support of a full grant from the Helpmann Academy Award.
